Australian Madison de Rozario has finished second in the Boston Marathon, sitting on the lower steps of the podium for the third time.

American Susannah Scaroni crossed the line first in the women's wheelchair division for her maiden victory in the event, five seconds ahead of De Rozario.

De Rozario finished third in Boston last year, also just behind Scaroni, and in 2019.

She also finished third in last year's New York City Marathon, which she won the year before.

The 29-year-old is also the reigning Paralympic T54 marathon champion and finished first in the 2018 London Marathon, but she has never won in Boston.

In fact, no Australian has been victorious in the race since Louise Sauvage won her fourth Boston crown in 2001, adding to her hat-trick from 1997-99.

Rob de Castella won the men's run in 1986.

This year, Kenya's Evans Chebet won the men's footrace for a second-straight time, ahead of Gabriel Geay of Tanzania and fellow Kenyan Benson Kipruto, with compatriot and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge sixth on his Boston debut.

Hellen Obiri, a two-time Olympic silver medallist in the 5,000 metres, made it a Kenyan sweep on the winners' steps with her victory in the women's race. Amane Beriso of Ethiopia was second, 12 seconds back, followed seven seconds later by Israeli Lonah Salpeter.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men's wheelchair race for the sixth time since 2015.
