Madhya pradesh: Kamal Nath asks party wings to speed-up membership drive

BHOPAL: State Congress committee president and former chief minister Kamal Nath in a meeting of the presidents of various cells and departments called upon them to speed-up the membership drive of the Congress party in the state.

The meeting was held at the official Shyamla Hills residence of LOP Kamal Nath where the veteran Congress leader said that the party will have to fight against the organizational strength of the BJP. Hence, Congress needs to have new members to strengthen its organisation.

In the closed-door meeting, Nath asked all Congress department and cell heads to make their individual strategies for the ongoing membership drive which will continue till March 31. State Congress is stressing on digital membership after the Telangana state unit achieved a record 30 lakh new members in two months. Madhya Pradesh Congress is targeting 50 lakh strong membership before the organizational elections start from April 1.

State Congress president Kamal Nath reminded the heads of different party cells and departments that the next assembly election is 19 months away. So, all wings should make a roadmap for the next 18 months of field work. He asked district party presidents to oversee the work of the different departments and call the different cell members for party meetings and activities. There are 35 cells and departments in the state Congress including the scheduled caste cell, the scheduled tribe cell, the traders’ cell, the legal cell, Bal Congress etc.

Speaking about the ruling BJP, Kamal Nath said, “I am willing to give an account of the work done during my regime of 15 months. But we want that the BJP also give details of work done in its 18-year rule.” The former Union minister Kamal Nath claimed that BJP uses the issues of Pakistan and nationalism to divert attention of the people from real issues.

Taking a dig at the BJP, the former chief minister said, “Five years ago, only 25% youth were connected to the social media. Today, 95% youth are linked to social media. Those persons who went to give knowledge to the people five years ago, should know that now voters are ready to impart knowledge.”
