Focus Features has confirmed that its micro-budget horror film 'Obsession', shot in just 20 days for under £800,000 ($1 million), has crossed £400 million ($500 million) at the worldwide box office.
The milestone, reached in August 2026, makes the Curry Barker-directed feature one of the most profitable original films ever released in cinemas. It has also propelled its lead, Inde Navarrette, towards a major studio franchise, as she prepares for her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Global Box Office Run for 'Obsession'
Made for less than £800,000 ($1 million), 'Obsession' has broken box office records for an original, independently originated film and acted as a major launchpad for its lead actor. Navarrette, who anchored the horror project, is now officially preparing for her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.
The film enjoyed a months-long theatrical run following a mid-May release, after the studio acquired the project on the festival circuit. The story follows a young woman who is forcibly transformed into a murderous girlfriend after a man makes a selfish wish involving a magical willow tree.
Word of mouth and repeat viewings among younger audiences helped the film surpass previous benchmarks. It is now the highest-grossing original film of the 2020s and the highest-grossing project made on a micro-budget.
Recent entertainment reports set out the scale of its returns. 'Obsession' secured £210.7 million ($263.4 million) in North America alone.
International markets contributed another £190.4 million ($238.1 million), pushing the confirmed global tally to £401.2 million ($501.5 million).
Specific territories played a notable role, generating £23.7 million ($29.7 million) in China and £21.3 million ($26.7 million) in the United Kingdom.
The film's performance ran counter to typical box office patterns. The horror feature opened to £13.6 million ($17.1 million) domestically, then saw weekend totals increase rather than decline, remaining above the initial figure for an entire month.
It did not fall below its opening weekend threshold until its sixth week in cinemas. Overseas takings showed similar staying power, with the project recently adding £2 million ($2.5 million) from late-release markets such as China and Germany.A pending release in South Korea is still expected to push the final gross higher.
‘OBSESSION’ has passed $500M worldwide.

'Obsession' and Inde Navarrette's Marvel Breakthrough
The return on a reported £600,000 ($750,000) production budget has affected the careers of the main cast. Navarrette's central performance led to her casting as Rogue in the upcoming Marvel Studios 'X-Men' film.
The move confirms her shift from independent horror projects to leading major studio releases. Her supporting co-stars are seeing increased attention as well. Michael Johnston is currently in talks to join Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in a Universal Pictures revival of 'The Mummy'.
The swift casting of the lead actors in major studio franchises shows how quickly the industry has responded to the film's box office results.
What Comes Next for Director Curry Barker
Barker is already moving forward with Focus Features on his next directorial project. Titled 'Anything but Ghosts', the new feature will star Barker alongside his co-writer Cooper Tomlinson as fraudulent paranormal investigators who are confronted by real supernatural entities.
The expanded cast will also feature Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul, indicating a substantial budget increase for the 26-year-old filmmaker's upcoming work.
