He regained new prominence in the late 2000s for his recurring role of elder 1960s New York City businessman Bertram on Mad Men.

Robert was born in Massachusetts and was inspired by his drama teacher Henry Lasker who "knew what I had burning in me and wanted to express".

After graduating, an ambitious Robert pursued his dream of becoming an actor by studying at Neighborhood Playhouse and received his first uncredited role in The Proud and Profane in 1956.

It was when he starred in The Matchmaker on Broadway that he really launched his career.

He went on to win a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Truman Capote in Tru in 1989.

And in 1992 he recreated his performance for the PBS series American Playhouse and won the Emmy Award as Best Actor in a Miniseries or Special.

He was later cast in The People v. O.J. Simpson series as journalist Dominick Dunne. Aged 85, Robert returned to Broadway in the 2016 revival of The Front Page.
