UFC strawweights Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill are still fighting each other – just not this Saturday as planned.
Originally booked for this weekend’s UFC on ABC 4 main card in Charlotte, N.C., the bout between Dern and Hill is shifting one week later to headline UFC Fight Night 224 on May 20 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Monday following an initial report by MMA Fighting. The UFC has yet to make an official announcement as of this writing.
UFC Fight Night 224 was in need of a main event after Irene Aldana vs. Raquel Pennington was canceled caused by Aldana moving into a title shot vs. bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in the UFC 289 headliner next month. That came about after Julianna Peña was forced to withdraw from her trilogy with Nunes because of injury.
Dern (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie strawweight rankings, will attempt to rebound from a main event loss to Yan Xiaonan at UFC Fight Night 211 in October. The 29-year-old has won five of her past seven fights overall.
Hill (15-12 MMA, 10-12 UFC) will attempt to break into the rankings on the heels of back-to-back wins over Loopy Godinez and Emily Ducote. The 38-year-old will make her 23rd octagon appearance with the bout, which will tie her with Jessica Andrade for most fights by any female in UFC history.
