SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A multi-agency maritime search operation stretched into its second day across the open waters of the Mona Channel on Tuesday after an overcrowded makeshift vessel capsized roughly 10 miles off Mona Island—the uninhabited nature reserve west of Puerto Rico —leaving at least three people dead and 10 more unaccounted for. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Tuesday it had rescued 49 people from the water and recovered three bodies, as rescuers continued sweeping the passage for anyone still missing.
