Macaulay Langstaff refusing to set personal targets at Notts County despite great start

Notts County’s in-form frontman Macaulay Langstaff believes his job as the primary goal scorer in the team is made easier by the number of creative options the team has.

The summer signing bagged his first hat-trick for the club at the weekend in the Magpies’ 5-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge after getting a couple of braces in previous fixtures. His tally for the season in the National League is already up to nine goals after just seven games which is an astonishing record for a player coming up from the tier below.

His goals so far this term have pushed County to the third spot in the league table; still unbeaten after seven games which is something only Chesterfield have been able to achieve themselves to this point in the fifth tier.

Expectations were high for Langstaff arriving at Meadow Lane off the back of a 30-goal season with Gateshead last year, but it must be said that even the most optimistic of Notts supporters would not have predicted this kind of start from a goalscoring perspective.

County do have a wealth of attacking options available to them and were especially delighted to see Ruben Rodrigues remain their player past the transfer window deadline, and Langstaff is certainly appreciative of the service he has received in games so far.

“A few people have asked me if I’ve set a goal target,” said Langstaff. “I don’t really worry about that stuff, and I try to take it game by game. I know it's a bit of a cliché, but if I am scoring goals and helping the team, that’s great, and I’ll look back at the end of the season and decide whether I am happy or not.

“You see, with the number of chances we create, I’ve just got to make sure that I am in the right place, and you see, with Ruben [Rodrigues]; he didn’t get his goal today, but it is unbelievable the space he is able to create for himself and the pockets he picks up to get into.

“We’ve attacking players that get high and wide and put crosses into the box at every opportunity, and I should always be there to score with the quality of the deliveries I am getting.

“The gaffer wants me to be in the middle of the six-yard box whenever we attack to pick up loose balls for tap-ins, and my second and third goals [against Dagenham] happened because I was in the right place at the right time.”
