Mac Jones slammed as "zero tool quarterback" with Bailey Zappe questions asked

Questions over who should be the New England Patriots quarterback moving forward look like they will not go away any time soon after Mac Jones had struggled in their win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The Patriots were able to win comfortably against the lowly Colts, who hugely struggled to move the ball with back-up quarterback Sam Ehlinger again showing his limitations completing just over 50% of his passes and throwing for 103 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

And whilst the Patriots continue to impress on the defensive side on the ball, it's at the quarterback position in which could be holding them back with Jones himself only throwing for 147 yards, with some continuing to call for Bailey Zappe to be put back in as the starter.

Zappe stepped in as the starting quarterback for two full games and performed well, winning both and throwing for five touchdons to three interceptions. Jones then came back against the Chicago Bears, splitting time with Zappe who threw for a touchdown in the game.

And Ringer CEO Bill Simmons, a Patriots fan who has largely been a big supporter of Jones, is now seemingly off the bandwagon.

Speaking on The Bill Simmons podcast, Simmons said: "Mac, I don't know what happened to him. I have no answers. I really believed in him last year when he brought real things to the table - he had poise, get rid of the ball fast, great decisions, great reads and he could move around in the pocket.

"He's a zero tool quarterback right now... he can't do anything well. He has no touch, he missed wide open guys (vs the Colts), he's not going through his reads and he's not moving around.

"He's a bottom-five quarterback right now. I don't know if it will stay that way but that is how he is performing."

Belichick has not been afraid to make the switch at quarterback in the past, most famously doing so with Drew Bledsoe in 2001, who had been the starting quarterback for the Patriots and was given a 10-year, $103million (£91m) deal before being benched that same season by one Tom Brady.

The comparison between Bledsoe-Brady and Jones-Zappe has been made by fans, but coach Belichick seemingly remains firmly of the position that Jones will be the starter at this point of the season.

Despite the quarterback controversy, the Patriots remain in a good stead at the halfway point of the season with a 5-4 record, but cannot afford to drop too many games whilst keeping up with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in the AFC North.
