The M62 near Leeds will be closed all night after a diesel spillage that has left drivers queuing for hours and means the entire road will need to be resurfaced.
National Highways Yorkshire first announced the westbound M62 carriageway had closed between Junction 28 and Junction 27 around 5pm. At 9pm, it was announced that all four lanes of the carriageway would have to be fully resurfaced due to the 'significant damage'.
For some drivers, the spillage has meant they've been stuck queuing for hours as many faced long delays. One woman tweeted asking how people were meant to get home if the road was closed all night, saying her partner had been queuing for three hours already.
National Highways said traffic was slowly being filtered off at J28, but it was taking a long time because of how much traffic there was. Throughout the length of the closure there were queues stretching back for miles near the closure.
Queues had mostly cleared by 11pm, but National Highways said the road would remain closed overnight while resurfacing work was completed. It added on twitter: "we don't have an estimated time at the moment, but these works usually are completed overnight in time for the morning rush hour."
The latest update from Inrix said: "M62 Westbound closed due to emergency repairs between J28 A653 Dewsbury Road (Tingley) and J27 M621 (Gildersome). Traffic is coping well.
"The road remains closed due to an earlier accident. Diesel has spilt across all three lanes, and the road is expected to remain closed throughout the evening."
National Highways gave a full statement around 6pm that read: "An LGV has broken down in an emergency refuge area and ruptured a fuel tank, resulting in the spillage of diesel across the carriageway. National Highways traffic officers, police and fire crews are at the scene.
"National Highways is now working to release traffic trapped near the scene. Traffic is being diverted from junction 28 onto the A650 and the A62 to re-join the M62 at junction 27.
"The spillage is expected to cause significant delays into this evening. In the meantime, drivers should leave extra time for their journeys or find alternative routes."
