M60 to temporarily shut and drivers to follow diversions for months for 'vital' bridge works

Drivers will be forced to follow diversions for three months as 'vital' bridge works will be carried out near Stockport. The improvements will take place between April and July on Wellington Road bridge, which crosses over the M60 between junctions one and 27 in Stockport.

Highways North West have announced they are planning to carry out safety improvements to the bridge, which include replacing both sides of the existing barrier with a new 1.8-metre-high steel barrier to 'improve safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians'.

Work is set to commence on April 25, with the aim of finishing three months later at the end of July. The work will take place in three phases, with various traffic management arrangements in place including overnight road closures and diversions.

What traffic management arrangements will be in place?

There will be lane closures in place on the A6 Wellington Road throughout the duration of the works. Wellington Road (A6) will be fully closed to motorists overnight between 9pm and 5am, which will be extended to 7am on weekends.

However, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available along Wellington Road at all times. As well as this, the M60 and the A560 Great Egerton Street will also need to be closed for temporary scaffolding to be set up.

Phase one

Phase one will involve the setting up of the temporary scaffolding to replace the safety barriers. This will take place overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest, say Highways North West.

The M60, A6 Wellington Road, and A560 Great Egerton Street will all be closed between 9pm and 5am on the following dates:

M60 anti-clockwise between junctions 1 and 25 - 26 April to 5 May and 16 May to 24 May

M60 clockwise between junctions 26 and 1 - 6 May to 11 May and 25 May to 30 May

A560 Great Egerton Street closures - 12 May to 14 May and 31 May to 7 June

Phase two

The second phase of the works will see the large safety barrier be replaced. A brand new 1.8-metre-high barrier will be erected on both sides of the bridge. This will involves full overnight closures of the A6 Wellington Road, and lane closures during the day.

Phase three

The final phase will see the temporary safety scaffolding removed once the barriers are fully fitted. During this time, there will be overnight closures on the M60, A6 Wellington Road and A560 Great Egerton Street between 9pm and 5am on the following dates:

M60 anti-clockwise between junctions 1 and 25 - 24 June to 28 June and 4 July to 8 July

M60 clockwise between junctions 26 and 1 - 29 June to 1 July and 8 July to 12 July

A560 Great Egerton Street - 2 July and 12 July

When Wellington Road (A6) is shut, drivers will be forced to follow the diversions along Exchange Street and King Street West. For the closures on Great Egerton Street, motorists should use the A6, Belmont Way and Lancashire Hill.

The A5145 and A560 must be used for when there are large closures along the M60 in both directions. For all the information on diversions as well as interactive maps, head to the Highways North West site.
