M6 partially re-opens after car crashes off motorway bridge

Police have partially re-opened a section of the M6 today after a serious crash

A white Vauxhall Corsa came off the bridge over the motorway and overturned, prompting the closure of the M6 at junction 17 in Sandbach in Cheshire due to a 'multi-vehicle accident'. The driver was taken to hospital by air ambulance although injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Tonight Cheshire Police announced that that part of the motorway had re-opened following a recovery operation and barrier repairs.

A spokesperson said: "Just to update you reference the earlier incident on M6 at Junction 17, the southbound carriageway is open and flowing now. On the northbound carriageway, traffic is being forced to exit the motorway at Junction 17 but can then rejoin at the same junction."

Earlier, the force said in a statement: "Shortly before 1.10pm on Monday, June 26, police were called to reports of an overturned car on the M6 near to junction 17.

"The incident involved a white Vauxhall Corsa which had fallen from the bridge along the A534 Congleton Road onto the northbound carriageway of the motorway.

"The M6 is currently closed northbound as a result of the incident and traffic is being diverted off the motorway and back on via the slip roads at junction 17. The A534 is also closed between Sandbach and Congleton due to damage to the bridge.

"The driver of the car, a man, has been taken to hospital by air ambulance, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time. Delays are expected and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible."

Video footage from the scene showed the emergency services at the scene and the badly Corsa on the back of a recovery truck.
