"One person has been taken to hospital as a result of the collision, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Recovery work is currently taking place at the scene and officers are working hard to reopen all lanes as quickly as possible."
Traffic was released and lanes reopened just before 11.30am. However, it is expected to take some time for the delays to clear.
National Highways said there were queues stretching more than four miles with drivers being delayed by at least 40 minutes. Congestion currently stretches back to junction 18 for Holmes Chapel whilst there are also reports of slower traffic on the opposite carriageway as drivers slow down to see what has happened.
The situation is also not being helped by queues further north due to emergency repairs. There is currently a rolling roadblock northbound between junctions 20 and 21 at the Thelwall Viaduct with two lanes closed.
