M6 crash near Manchester Airport causes 12-mile tailbacks and 60-minute delays

There are long delays on the M6 this afternoon after a crash closed the motorway. All lanes are now open, but there is still 12 miles of traffic about 20 minutes from Manchester Airport.

Travel time is around 60 minutes on the northbound side of the motorway from J18 (Middlewich) and J19 (Tabley Interchange). National Highways said the chaos has been caused by a crash involving a lorry. One patient was taken to hospital.

Onlookers on the opposite side of the road are also causing congestion, according to traffic monitoring service Inrix. Its alert said: "Severe delays due to earlier accident, two cars involved on M6 Northbound at Knutsford Services. Congestion to J17 (Sandbach / Crewe)."

National Highways tweeted: "All lanes have now reopened on the #M6 northbound between J18 (#Middlewich) and J19 (#TableyInterchange).

"There is still approx. 12 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 60 minutes above usual journey times."
