Diversion routes are in place following a crash on the M5 northbound, which left the stretch of motorway closed on the Devon/Somerset border between junction 27 (Tiverton) and junction 26 (Taunton). According to National Highways, the collision involved a lorry and a car and police have now completed their collision investigation.
Now access to the scene is possible, the carriageway surface is being inspected due to a large oil spill caused by the collision and the carriageway may need to be resurfaced before reopening. Recovery work is underway this morning (September 10) and the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours more.
National Highways has reported around 1.5 miles of congestion on the approach to the closure and is advising road users to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs.
