Emergency services were called just before 4.30pm after a two-vehicle crash along the southbound route between junction 20 B3133 Ettlingen Way for Clevedon to junction 21 A370 for Weston-super-Mare.
Both sides of the carriageway were brought to a standstill to allow emergency services to assist. An air ambulance was deployed and both Avon and Somerset Police and Avon Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene.
All lanes on the northbound route reopened shortly after, with closures remaining in place on the southbound side to clear debris from the road.
