Diversion routes have been set up on the M4 as police have closed a stretch of the motorway for hours this afternoon (March 18). An incident on an overbridge in Swindon has forced officers to close the road in both directions between Junction 16 for A3102 Swindon Road (Swindon West) and Junction 15 for A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).
It shut at about 1.50pm and remains closed more than four hours later, creating long delays for drivers. National Highways have released details of diversion routes which have been set up to ease the congestion.
Eastbound diversions are are via the A3102 and A4259 and are signed by the hollow circle symbol on local road signs. Westbound diversions are via the A4259 and A3102 and are signed by the hollow triangle symbol on local road signs.

Traffic monitoring site posted an update at 6.15pm which said that "long delays" remain on the road. The update said: "M4 in both directions closed long delays, queuing traffic due to police incident between J16 A3102 Swindon Road (Swindon West) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).
"Congestion to routes through Swindon as traffic diverts from the closure. Traffic has been stationary since 13:50, affecting traffic passing Swindon."
