Drivers on the M25 faced delays as a section of the motorway was closed in both directions after a lorry crash brought down power lines.
The motorway was closed in Essex between junction 28 for Brentwood and junction 27 for the M11 for hours on Tuesday. National Highways said the crash on Tuesday afternoon involved two lorries, one of which came to rest on the nearside embankment.
This incident resulted in extensive barrier damage and also brought down a power line, it added. Drivers were told to expect delays of more than an hour.
Emergency services including Essex Police attended the scene, while National Highways traffic officers also assisted with traffic management.
The clockwise carriageway was closed so that UK Power Networks can safely assess the damage at scene.
Lanes began to reopen again at around 4pm.
During the incident, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: “Our crews are currently on scene following a road traffic collision involving a lorry. During the collision, power cables were brought down.
“Drivers are asked to remain in their vehicles while we deal with the incident.
“Essex Police are also asking motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes - the road may be closed for some time.
“We thank all motorists for their patience while we work with our colleagues Essex Police and National Highways as we continue to work to make the scene safe.”
