M1 reopen hours after car transporter carrying vehicles bursts into flames

The M1 has reopened after a lorry caught fire southbound between junctions 26 and 27. Nottinghamshire Fire Service received a call at 1.39pm today, December 5, to a car transporter with seven vehicles on fire.

Crews from Ashfield, Stockhill and Hucknall were at the scene tackling the blaze, along with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Alfreton Fire Station and Clay Cross Fire Station's Water Carrier.

The M1 was closed both northbound and southbound, between junctions 26-27 and junctions 26-28 as firefighters tried to put out the fire.

Traffic that was caught up within the northbound closure was released and passed the scene via the hard shoulder just before 4.30pm. Along with traffic in the southbound which was turned around from the rear of the queue.

At around 8pm, all vehicles from the car transporter were safely removed and National Highways teams were in the process of reopening some lanes. Just after 9pm all lanes were reopened.

National Highways tweeted: "All lanes have now reopened on the #M1 northbound between J26 - J27 and southbound between J28 - J26 following the vehicle transporter which caught fire. Please allow extra travel time whilst remaining delays on approach clear."
