Images have been released of a five-car pile-up that has caused delays of nearly an hour heading south on the M1. Emergency services halted traffic travelling along the carriageway between junction 17 and 16 in Northamptonshire at around 12noon on Sunday, May 22.
Traffic was released shortly after, however, six-and-a-half miles of congestion have been reported on the approach, causing delays of nearly an hour. The delays will affect motorists travelling from Nottinghamshire down towards London.

In an update at 12.48pm, National Highways released images of the crash. They show five vehicles that were involved in the pile-up. One van has almost been entirely mounted by the car in front as a result.
The update, on Twitter, read: "3 (of 4) lanes remain closed on the #M1 southbound in #Northamptonshire between J17 and J16 (#Northampton). There are now delays of just under an hour on approach, with 6 and a half miles of congestion. Consider alternative routes this afternoon if you can."
