Luther fans excited as Idris Elba reveals he will return as titular character for upcoming film

Luther fans were drooling after Idris Elba revealed he was returning as the titular character for the upcoming Netflix film.

The Hollywood star made the announcement on his Instagram account along with a promotional video teasing his return as DCI John Luther.

The film, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, will be released in cinemas on February 24 before being available to stream online on Netflix on March 10. Idris, 50, looked stony-faced in the trailer as he stared down the camera in the short clip.

He did not break his stance as two voiceovers sounded in the promo video. One said: "Something's coming," before another added: "You see me now?"

The announcement sent fans into delirium, with many struggling to contain their excitement of the news of the series which became popular on BBC.

Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka was among the many stars to comment on the post with three fire emojis.

One fan exclaimed: "Literally in time for my birthday….I'M GETTING IDRIS FOR MY BIRTHDAY…!!!"

Another comment: "HOLY S**T WE ARE GOING. PERFECT BDAY PRESENT FOR ME," while a third added: "The king IS back."

A fourth fan claimed Elba could be a candidate for the vacant James Bond role, left by Daniel Craig. They wrote: "And you see this man like this and telling me he wouldn’t be an ace Bond? You are looking with your eyes closed."

The psychological crime thriller ran for five series spanning over nine years, with the first episode airing in May 2010 before the finale of series in January 2019.

One mystery which still remains is whether or not Ruth Wilson's character Alice Morgan will be returning. With all the images focusing on the main man, other fans confessed they'll be switching off if Ruth doesn't make the cut.

The film is set to seamlessly follow on from the last series' ending in 2019 which saw the star character jailed.

Speaking to Robert Bruce on Capital XTRA Breakfast last summer shortly after filming, Idris admitted that any new viewers won't be lost with the story line as the production offers "a whole story".

He said: "Even if you don’t know Luther, who he is, or anything about him, the film attempts to be whole for a new audience."

Alongside starring in the film, Idris serves as a producer. He is joined by castmates Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo, with Jamie Payne directing the film, which was written by Neil Cross.
