Lurpak has explained why a 750g tub of its butter now costs £7.25 in Sainsbury's.
The popular dairy spread has become symbolic of the spiralling cost of living, with shoppers shocked by the prices they are now seeing in supermarkets. The new yellow gold has risen in price so much that some stores including ASDA have reportedly started to add security tags in a bid to deter shop lifters.
In its online store, Sainsbury's is charging £7.25 for a 750 tub of the lightly salted favourite. Tesco is cheaper, with the same-sized tub selling for £5.30. An image posted on twitter showed 750g packs for £6 in Asda, a reduction the shelf label said of 75p, but still at £8 a kilogramme.
The average price of a 500g of Lurpak has risen by 33% compared with June last year, according to data analyst Trolley.co.uk. Just a few weeks ago, a 500 tub of could be bought for £3.65 in Iceland - now that same tub costs around £5.
However, Lurpak has suggested eye-watering price rises are to ensure that dairy farmers get a fair deal, reported the BBC. A statement from Lurpak's owner Arla Foods said: "We understand that recent inflation in food price is hitting many households really hard right now.
"Unfortunately, our farmers are facing a similar situation with prices for the feed, fertiliser and fuel they need to produce milk, all rising significantly in recent months. While we don't set the prices on the shelves, we do work closely with the retailers to ensure our farmers receive a fair price for the milk they produce."
