The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will begin testing a new smart parking management system at Lumpini Park in September as part of efforts to ease chronic parking congestion and improve convenience and safety for park visitors.
The BMA said the upgraded system is designed to address the long-standing problem of motorists leaving their vehicles in the park's car park for extended periods while travelling elsewhere, reducing the number of spaces available for visitors, particularly during the busy morning and evening exercise periods. The project forms part of the city's wider push to modernise public facilities through technology while ensuring parking spaces at one of Bangkok's most popular parks are used more efficiently for their intended purpose.
The improvements will cover the car park near the Witthayu Road entrance extending towards Sarasin Road. The facility has 377 parking spaces for cars, comprising 348 standard bays and 29 double-parked spaces, as well as 191 motorcycle parking spaces.
The BMA will introduce an automatic licence plate recognition (LPR) system and QR code-based online payment to speed up vehicle entry and exit. Officials said the technology can process each vehicle in less than eight seconds.
Additional CCTV cameras will also be installed to improve security in the parking area. The smart parking system will undergo a trial period from Sept 15 to 30, allowing officials to evaluate its performance and make any necessary adjustments ahead of its rollout on Oct 1.
