Lulu says Glasgow 'has to' host Eurovision as city officially launches bid

Former winner of the Eurovision Song Contest Lulu has backed calls for next year's competition to be held in Glasgow.

The Glasgow singer, who was born in Stirlingshire but grew up in Dennistoun, said the city was "the most fabulous hosts". She also praised Glasgow for being "politically savvy".

It follows the news that the city has officially launched a bid to host the iconic music event. As Glasgow Live previously reported, the city council has confirmed that it has been working hard to secure hosting privileges.

It was confirmed on Monday that the UK would officially host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. The competition was due to be held in Ukraine as they won the 2022 event, but the country declined amid its ongoing war with Russia.

Appearing on BBC Two's Newsnight programme to discuss the news, Lulu stated that Glasgow was "music mad" and that it "would be the most fabulous thing" for the city to host next year's show. The singer won the competition for the UK in 1969 with the song 'Boom Bang-a-Bang'.

She said: "It has to be Glasgow because that's where I come from. They're so politically savvy, they're the most fabulous hosts, they absolutely are music mad.

"I think it would be just the most fabulous thing, and I would be there. I just cannot wait."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "Since it became a possibility that the UK might host on behalf of Ukraine we've been working hard on our bid. We know we meet all the technical requirements, and we know Glaswegians are desperate to welcome the world with open arms.

"Time is now really short to organise the contest and, having recently hosted Cop, we know Glasgow is the safest of safe pairs of hands."
