Luke Williams reiterates Notts County disappointment ahead of Southend clash despite great run

Luke Williams has highlighted the disappointment of the way in which his Notts County side have conceded unnecessary goals against both Barnet and Yeovil.

The Magpies extended their winning run to six games with the victory at Huish Park, taking their unbeaten record in the National League to 24 games ahead of another tough test against Southend at Meadow Lane on Tuesday evening.

Notts' last two fixtures have seen them score eight goals but concede twice through mistakes in defence, highlighting that defensive vulnerability that has lingered in recent seasons.

At the weekend it was Sam Slocombe and Geraldo Bajrami at the centre of discussion, failing to deal with an overhit ball which allowed Andrew Oluwabori to steal in before lobbing the ball into the net to level the scores in Somerset.

The incident gained interest with a number of fans having their say, with the Notts chief reiterating his disappointment about conceding yet another avoidable goal, but highlighted the performance of Slocombe who made a number of important saves to preserve all three points.

"It's disappointing when we make a mistake that leads to a goal like that," said Williams.

"But then when we played Chesterfield Sam gets an assist because he is prepared to be gutsy and help us - he has been involved in more goals than any other goalkeeper, in terms of being involved in the build-up that has eventually led to a goal.

"That is talking about him helping us to score goals, but he is a goalkeeper and most importantly he stops them from going in and he's brilliant at that.

"The game at that point was becoming end to end and it required him to do the most important things and make saves and he did that brilliantly.

"It is very disappointing for him and disappointing for all of us to concede in that manner, but let's not forget that all the teams, Yeovil were no exception, they kept applying pressure and we have to focus non-stop for the whole game, but in the end his performance was excellent."

In their win over Barnet six days ago, it was Aden Baldwin with a rare lapse in concentration, with his miscontrol from Matty Palmer's simple pass allowing Harry Smith with the simple task of putting Dean Brennan's side ahead inside ten minutes.

With the pressure further intensifying in this remarkable season as Wrexham snatched a late winner at Aldershot to keep within five points of the league leaders, Williams was asked whether these mistakes could be coached out of his side, or whether his side were feeling the pressure from Phil Parkinson's men.

"There are things that go into that mixture, for sure.

"We scored eight goals in two games and we are still an honest group and we know we didn't do things quite how we should do.

"In both games we scored eight but conceded two and the goals we conceded were disappointing and they do give you a feeling that fatigue and a lot of other things that cause us to make mistakes.

"But we do so many good things that we are able to score eight goals in two games, four away from home, so there is a lot of good stuff going on as well and the players need to be praised hugely for that.

"Unfortunately, I can not allow them to rest because I know what it is going to take and they understand that as well - we can survive mistakes if 99% of what we do is good."
