Luis Suarez takes dig at Barcelona as former Liverpool striker wins La Liga with Atletico Madrid

Luis Suarez has taken a dig at former club Barcelona after leading Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title.

The former Liverpool striker was forced out of Camp Nou last summer following suggestions he was on the decline as a player after the Catalans endured an underwhelming season.

However, he silenced his doubters in emphatic fashion by scoring 21 goals after joining Atletico on a free transfer to lead them to the title.

The Uruguayan scored comeback winners in 2-1 victories over Osasuna and Real Valladolid to see off the challenge of local-rivals Real Madrid to clinch the title.

Of his 21 goals, seven proved to be winners while his strikes won more points for his team than any other player in La Liga.

And after finishing seven points clear of third-placed Barcelona, Suarez was left in tears on the pitch following Atletico's La Liga triumph as he face-timed his family.

And clearly still hurt by his Barcelona exit, he couldn't resist reminding his old club of how they discarded him as he reflected on his latest trophy win.

"Barcelona didn't value me and Atletico opened their doors for me," he said.

"I will always be grateful to this club for trusting in me.

"I'm sure (Lionel) Messi is happy for me as a friend. It was a difficult situation that I had to experience because of the way I was treated (by Barcelona).

"Atletico had a great season despite the difficulties. It wasn't normal that we had such a good first half of the season and it wasn't normal that we had that big dip either but in the end we end up as champions."
