Luis Suarez proved his affection for Liverpool still burns strong by taking to social media to congratulate his former club on their FA Cup triumph.
The Reds defeated Chelsea via a penalty shootout on Saturday afternoon after 120 goalless minutes at Wembley. Alisson and Kostsas Tsimikas were the heroes for Liverpool as the former denied Mason Mount from 12 yards before the latter struck the winning spot kick.
Liverpool's success marked their first FA Cup triumph since 2006 and saw them claim revenge for their defeat by Chelsea in the 2012 final. Suarez was among those who featured in the showdown a decade ago but was unable to prevent Kenny Dalglish's side falling to a 2-1 defeat, with Ramires and Didier Drogba scoring for the Blues before Andy Carroll pulled a goal back.
The mercurial Uruguayan forward would go on to spend two more seasons at Anfield and his overall tally stands at a remarkable 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds. Suarez remains a much-loved figure among Liverpool fans - even though he departed for Barcelona - and there remains a close bond between the player and the club.
This was on display in the wake of this weekend's final as the Atletico Madrid ace posted an Instagram story to his 43million-plus followers. He wrote: "Congratulations to @LiverpoolFC for winning the FA Cup! YNWA."
Suarez is nearing the end of his own season with Atletico, who take on Sevilla in their penultimate La Liga game of the season on Sunday evening. Diego Simeone's side sit third in the table and are on the brink of securing Champions League qualification.

That being said, it has been a somewhat disappointing season for Atletico, who have been overpowered by local rivals Real Madrid to fall short in their bid to defend the league title. Suarez was at the heart of last season's success by scoring 21 goals but he has only found the back of the net 11 times in the top-flight this term.
The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and it does not appear as though he will be offered a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano. His reported preference is to remain in Spanish football but there is believed to be interest in his services from across Europe, in Italy and the Netherlands.
While a return to Liverpool has also been rumoured in the past, this scenario appears to be very unlikely. Atletico face Real Sociedad in their final game of the season next weekend.
