Luis Suarez makes major Darwin Nunez claim after Liverpool transfer

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has refused to be drawn in on comparisons with new signing Darwin Nunez.

The Reds confirmed the signing last week and they'll pay Benfica an initial fee of £64.1million (€75m) and a possible £21.3m (€25m) in add-ons. The 22-year-old forward was the Portuguese league's top goalscorer last season.

Nunez follows in the footsteps of national teammate Suarez, who spent three years at Anfield between 2011 and 2014. The 35-year-old made over 130 appearances for Liverpool and scored 82 goals in that time.

Despite the Uruguay links, Suarez insists Nunez 'doesn't need' to be compared with anybody and his talent will speak for itself in the Premier League.

He said in an interview with The Mirror : “He (Nunez) will write his own story at Liverpool. He is Uruguayan and he is a forward but that is where the comparisons stop - he is a special player and doesn't need to be compared with anybody.

“It was last season that Europe started to take notice of him because of his performances for Benfica - but from an early age I could see there was something special in him. While he was at Almeria I recommended him to Barcelona but it was something that never happened.”

Nunez made the move to Europe in 2019 to join Spanish side UD Almeria before he was signed by Benfica the following summer. In 84 appearances for the Portuguese side, he scored 47 goals and registered 16 assists, alerting the attention of clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United.
