Luis Diaz transfer acts as major hurdle for £30m Liverpool summer bid

Almost two years ago, Liverpool wanted a new forward to share the workload with Jurgen Klopp's customary front three. Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah deserved at least one rotation option between them.

Diogo Jota was the player who ended up moving to Anfield after edging out other names on Liverpool's shortlist, one of which will face the Reds this weekend. Ismaila Sarr remains at Watford but at the time, the club enquired about his price.

Still just 24 years-old, the Senegalese international is still young enough for Liverpool to be interested in him. Could his future lie on Merseyside?

Sarr has scored five Premier League goals while registering one assist from 16 appearances this season, and he bagged 11 times in the Championship last season, excluding two penalties.

Klopp knows all about Sarr's level. He's caused issues for his defensive players in the past having scored twice in Watford's famous 3-0 win over Liverpool in 2020, which was the first defeat suffered by the Reds after 28 matches of the 2019/20 campaign.

On top of his showings against Liverpool, Sarr is also an international teammate of Mane, who is known to have previously alerted Andy Robertson of his dangerous qualities before facing him.

He's very much in the mould of Jota, Mane, Firmino and - to a lesser extent - Salah when it comes to attackers who have rocked up at Anfield since Klopp's arrival.

Each of those players had demonstrated valuable potential, but while drifting under the radar and without showcasing true consistency, allowing Liverpool to sign them for reasonable prices.

The Hornets talisman is fast, industrious and threatening, and he's shown to be impressively versatile at Vicarage Road having played on both flanks and through the middle over the past 12 months. Reports, however, value him in the region of £30m.

Luis Diaz's signing in January renders a move for Sarr as less likely considering the duo are both right-footed, although Sarr's familiarity with the right flank could open up the possibility of him acting a backup option for Salah.

A future deal for him now seems like a long shot, but a strong performance from him this weekend could grab Liverpool's attention once more.
