Luis Diaz to Liverpool transfer: 'Furious' Porto manager refuses to give approval

Porto manager Sérgio Conceição is said to be 'furious' his employers are willing to sell Luis Diaz to Liverpool and refuses to give his approval on the transfer.

Liverpool have beaten off competition from Tottenham and Manchester United to agree a deal worth £50million for the winger.

Diaz is currently on international duty with Colombia and will undergo a medical in Argentina ahead of the fixture between the two teams on Tuesday.

It is expected his move to Anfield will be completed over the weekend, with Liverpool set to pay an initial £37.5m, with a further £12.5m in add-on fees due dependent on his performance on Merseyside.

His release clause fee is set at £67m, but Porto were willing to accept a lower offer due to their financial struggles, having missed out on the Champions League knockout stages.

Fury

The deal will give Porto a welcome cash boost, but boss Conceição has been angered by the transfer.

Reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sport Witness) claim Conceição is 'displeased' he will no longer have Diaz in his squad when Porto are battling it out for the domestic title.

His side are currently top of the Primeira Liga, six points clear of Sporting Lisbon and nine ahead of Benfica in third.

While there is some breathing space between them and the chasing pack, Diaz has been an instrumental figure in Porto's dressing room.

The 25-year-old is the division's second top goalscorer - and Porto's highest - with 14 so far in this campaign.

As such, Conceição has made it clear to the Porto board that he does not approve of Diaz's sale.

It is not known whether Porto will look to reinvest any of the fee from Diaz into a replacement this month.

Negotiations

Liverpool swooped in to hijack a deal after learning that Tottenham had agreed a fee totalling £48m.

Diaz was adamant he wanted to join Liverpool, however, and the involvement of super agent Jorge Mendes stalled Tottenham's bid enough for the Reds to capitalise.

His move signals a real statement of intent from Liverpool, who have been strengthened in their own title pursuit at Porto's expense.

The deal also represents a glimpse at Liverpool's future, with the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all into their final 18 months.

Future

It is not clear at this stage whether Liverpool will look to tie all three players down to new contracts or if they will be open to selling any of them in the coming months.

Jurgen Klopp is prepared to let go Takumi Minamino or Divock Origi, though, both of whom are now surplus to requirements amid Diaz's impending arrival.

Liverpool haver already rejected bids from Leeds United and Monaco for Minamino as they are demanding a substantial fee to part ways with the Japanese forward, who has struggled to find his feet at Anfield.

Origi, meanwhile, enjoys cult hero status at the club, but has been lingering by the exit door for the past few seasons.

There is believed to be strong interest in the Belgian forward, who could well depart before Monday's deadline.
