Luis Diaz must wait for 'dream' shirt as Liverpool squad number confirmed

Liverpool have a new player in their ranks following the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto.

The Reds have completed a deal to bring the Colombia international to Anfield after striking a £49m deal with Porto.

The 25-year-old was believed to have had a £67m release clause in his contract, but Porto have been forced to take a financial hit after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

As a result, the Reds' bid of £37m with a further £12m has been a successful one.

Diaz has been handed the number 23 shirt at Liverpool, while others numbers including 19 and 24 were also available.

This is a change from the number 7 he wore at Porto, and it could be a while before he gets his dream number at Anfield.

James Milner is the current owner of the iconic shirt number, having been handed that honour when he arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2015.

Before Milner had the honour, Luis Suarez was the previous owner of the historic number 7 shirt.

Club legends Sir Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Ian Callaghan and Steve McManaman have all worn the famous shirt in the Reds' history.

When Mohamed Salah arrived from Roma in 2017, he wanted to have the number 11 shirt which was then owned by Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian agreed to swap his shirt number to 9, following the departure of Christian Benteke, which allowed Salah to wear his desired number.

While Milner is not likely to swap his number mid-season for Diaz, it’s possible there could be a change if and when the veteran midfielder calls time on his playing stint at Liverpool.
