Luis Diaz admits 'surprise' over Liverpool situation as Jurgen Klopp decision justified

Such has been the impact of Luis Diaz at Liverpool, the January signing has even surprised himself over his ability to seamlessly slot into Jurgen Klopp's side.

Questions were raised over how long it would take the 25-year-old to adapt to the Premier League following his move from Porto, though he has emphatically silenced any doubts supporters may have previously had.

Diaz provided an early indication of his quality inside 10 minutes of his Liverpool debut against Cardiff City, regaining possession in the final third before teeing up Takumi Minamino to fire home, and has since gone from strength to strength after being thrown in at the deep end by Klopp.

The Colombian has impressed in each of his nine outings to date, notably in the Carabao Cup final versus Chelsea as the Reds secured their first piece of silverware of the season.

Asked if he has been shocked by his ability to hit the ground running in such style, Diaz said: "It has been a bit of a surprise, yeah.

"This is how I wanted everything to work out. I wanted to settle as quickly as possible, as I was saying before, and to get to know the style of play and feel comfortable.

"In training and on the field, I think I've managed to develop a good understanding with my team-mates – and I think that's been down to both them and the coaching staff, who have helped me in this settling-in period. They have been a great help to me. I'm here to try to help, I'm here to try to support the team and the lads. As I say, I want to just keep doing my best."

Diaz could yet have a crucial part to play as Liverpool look to add to the one trophy they have already claimed during the 2021/22 campaign.

The Reds are through to the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and FA Cup and the skilful winger is hopeful that the success he has already experienced since arriving can be repeated in the coming weeks.

"It's going the best way possible and it's kind of the way that we all wanted," Diaz told liverpoolfc.com of his start to life on Merseyside.

"Certainly from a personal point of view, it's just how I wanted to try to start and what I've dreamed of and how I dreamed of starting. I knew that I'd come to a very competitive club involved in everything. So, I'm really, really happy how it's started and long may it continue."
