Luggage abandoned on Manchester Airport runway for hours

A holidaymaker told of the moment luggage was left abandoned on the tarmac at Manchester Airport for hours.

The passenger, who did not want to be named, branded the airport "a mess" after witnessing what happened this week. A video taken by the man shows bags which appear to be abandoned lying on the ground outside - where he claims they remained for hours, the MEN reports.

He said: “I watched these bags fall from the transport to the plane. They were left there for around one hour 40 minutes before being picked up and left in the same place for I don’t know how long.”

He said he was sat watching the bags for over three hours, during which time they did not move. It follows a host of complaints from airport customers that luggage is not being delivered to destinations.

"Manchester Airport is a mess at the minute. It's a joke how they're handling stuff".

Luggage is handled at the site by aviation services company Swissport. Manchester Airport said that each airline employs its own baggage handling agents, and they are unable to comment on those operations.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “The process of taking baggage to and from aircraft is managed by a range of third-party handling agents, which each airline contracts directly.

“However, we expect the highest standards when any company operating on our site is handling passengers’ luggage and will raise this with them as a matter of urgency to understand what happened and why.”

The Manchester Evening News has approached Swissport for comment.
