Lugar 0 Ardeer Thistle 7: Boss jokes he got team wrong as strikers draw blank in goal-fest

Sean Kenney joked he got his team selection all wrong after his Ardeer Thistle side ran riot against Lugar Boswell to book a place in the second round of the West of Scotland League cup.

Attack-minded Kenney went with three forwards for Saturday's first round clash at Rosebank Park.

But not one of them got on the scoresheet as centre-half Jake Sillars and sub Robert Frew stole the show with doubles apiece.

Further strikes from Michael Howie, Marc Wardrope and Jack McWilliam completed an excellent afternoon's work for the Stevenston outfit.

And boss Kenney admitted the performance was the perfect response to last week's disappointing 4-0 league defeat away to Thorniewood.

He said: "The boys held their hands up, as did I, after the Thorniewood game.

"It was really disappointing and we had a good chat through the week about what is expected on the park.

"I have to say the boys deserve a lot of credit and praise for the reaction they showed against Lugar.

"Maybe I picked the wrong team though - none of the front three scored!

"Seriously though, it was great to see other players chip in with goals, especially Jake Sillars because he's had a tough time with injuries in the last two years and that was him coming back in again.

"The Lugar keeper had an unbelievable game too, making some top saves, so it could have been more."

Ardeer broke the deadlock in seven minutes when McWilliam fired home from the edge of the box.

They had to bide their time for number two to arrive - Sillars slotting the ball home on the stroke of half-time.

Lugar put up decent resistance until the floodgates opened in the final 15 minutes.

Howie found the bottom corner of the net with a fine curling effort before Wardrope made it 4-0 when he converted a cross at the back post.

Sillars volleyed home his second goal of the afternoon soon after before Frew scored twice in the final three minutes to wrap up the scoring.
