Lucknow: Cleaning deadline over 5 days ago, but choked drains still raise a stink

LUCKNOW: Monsoon is around the corner, but cleaning work of city drains by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is still incomplete five days after the expiry of the deadline set by mayor Sanyukta Bhatia

TOI reality check on Monday found choked rains in over two dozen localities such as Balaganj, Gomtinagar, Indiranagar, Chowk, Daliganj, City station, Bijali Pasi Quila, Ashiana, LDA colony and Kanpur Road. Residents also showed their concern that if the task is not completed before monsoon it may lead to extensive waterlogging as it had happened after heavy showers on May 23.

In her surprise inspection, the mayor also found clogged drains in Bibiganj, Pata Nala and Campwell Road areas and issued show cause notice to zonal sanitary officer (ZSO) Satendra Katiyar and reprimanded the executive engineer of the area. She also directed him to get drains cleaned within three days.

“Every day zone wise inspections are being carried out to verify drainage cleaning work in the city. Action will be against officials concerned taken if irregularities are found. We will ensure full cleaning before monsoon,” she told TOI.
