Star Wars production company Lucasfilm has sent congratulations to the team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day after it became the highest-grossing film of all time in North America.
The blockbuster has grossed 936.7 million US dollars (£699.4 million) across America and Canada in just 47 days, beating the record of 936.6 million (£699.3 million) by Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Lucasfilm wrote on social media: “Impressive. Most impressive.
“From a galaxy far, far away, everyone at Lucasfilm sends massive congratulations to Destin, Tom, everyone at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and the entire team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day on setting a new domestic box office record and taking the crown from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The company shared an animated photo of Spider-Man throwing his hands in the air along with a message reading: “The force is strong with you! Congratulations from Lucasfilm.”
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Instagram account also posted a message acknowledging the record, writing: “Doesn’t get bigger than this.
“Thank you to the fans for helping #SpiderManBrandNewDay make cinematic history – it’s now the highest-grossing domestic release of ALL TIME at the North American box office.”
Brand New Day has become the quickest feature to reach multiple domestic box office milestones from 400 million US dollars (£298 million) to 900 million (£671 million).
It is currently the third-highest grossing film of all time, with 2.45 billion US dollars (£1.82 billion) made at the global box office.
It is beaten only by Avengers: Endgame at 2.7 billion US dollars (£2 billion) and the highest grossing film of all time, Avatar, at 2.9 billion US dollars (£2.16 billion).
Brand New Day, which was released on July 31, is actor Tom Holland’s fourth outing as web-slinging hero Peter Parker.
The film made 355 million dollars (£263 million) in the US and Canada on its opening weekend and another 572 million dollars (£425 million) at the international box office.
Sony Pictures spent 225 million dollars (£167 million) to make Brand New Day, not including marketing costs.
