Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira has been left in limbo after Fiorentina pulled the plug on a move for the midfielder.
Torreira spent last season on loan at the Italian club and they had the option to make the deal permanent this summer for a fee of €15million (£13m).
Fiorentina refused to pay that price, however, and had been hoping to sign the Uruguayan for less.
A deal has now collapsed and Torreira has been left with an uncertain future at Arsenal with only a year remaining on his contract.
Arsenal are ready to cash in on the midfielder and it is understood that his preference remains on a move to Italy.
Torreira has always felt more settled there than England and he had been banking on a move to Fiorentina being made permanent.
The 26-year-old posted a goodbye message to Fiorentina fans on social media last night, with his agents now expected to sound out interest from other Serie A clubs.
