LSU's standout linebacker, Harold Perkins Jr., has suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear, LSU coach Brian Kelly confirmed on Monday. Perkins, who was expected to enter the NFL draft after this season, will no longer be able to play for the Tigers due to this injury.
The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of LSU's recent victory over UCLA, where Perkins, a preseason AP All-America selection, was making a tackle. This unfortunate incident has brought an end to what was anticipated to be a significant season for the talented linebacker.
Perkins made a remarkable impact during his freshman year, showcasing his skills with 7 1/2 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, and an interception. In the following season, he continued to excel, playing various linebacker positions and contributing 5 1/2 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and an interception.
However, this season had not been as productive for Perkins, as he had not recorded a sack, managed only 1 1/2 tackles for loss, and had not forced any turnovers in the four games played so far.
Coach Kelly expressed his regret over the injury, emphasizing the hard work Perkins had put in and the impact he had on the team. Despite this setback, Kelly remains optimistic, stating that the team has talented players who can step up to fill the void left by Perkins.
As LSU navigates the remainder of the season without Perkins, the team will look to other players to rise to the occasion and continue their pursuit of success on the field.
