Petrol prices may be inching their way back down at a snail’s pace, but they still very much feel ‘through the roof’. And shoppers could be missing out on cheaper petrol prices with these little-known loyalty schemes.
At some retailers, there’s a way to save an extra 5p a litre, just by filling up with the same branch each time.
As of Monday, August 15, the RAC reported that the average price of unleaded was 173.46p - 2p cheaper than last week - while diesel was 184.21p, also 2p cheaper that the previous week.

But with the price of filling up your shopping trolley rising and energy costs soaring, the price of fuel still stings, with many motorists still struggling to fill their tanks up amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.
Forecourts at Esso, BP, Texaco, Shell, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all offer loyalty schemes that a free to sign up to, which could help shave a few pence off at the pump. Here’s what each of them offer:
Esso
If you have a Nectar card, you could be earning extra points when you fill up at Esso, or use your points to knock money off your fuel bill.
At Sainsbury's you can collect one point for every £1 spent, which can then be used at Sainsbury’s or one of their partnered retailers, like Esso. But you can also collect points by purchasing fuel at Esso, or shop products in their stores.
Motorists can also collect Nectar points when washing their car at a participating Esso, simply scanning the Nectar card at the checkout counter, and waiting for them to be loaded.
Nectar points can be used to get a discount on fuel at participating Esso branded service stations, earning up to 5p off per litre. There is a minimum fill up of 10 litres, but drivers can then swap 300 Nectar points to get the 5p per litre discount.
BP
At BP, shoppers can earn points when they fuel up or spend in store, and use these to knock a quid off their fuel in the future.
The driver will need the BPme Rewards app to instantly save on every gallon when they fill up at BP and Amoco stations. On the app, customers will find a digital BPme Rewards card which can be scanned at the till when making purchases, and will be applied automatically to BPme transactions.
You will earn one point for each £1 spent in-store, one point for every litre of regular fuel, or two points for every litre of Ultimate fuel. For every 200 points earned, motorists will get £1 off their fuel or shopping.
Texaco
Texaco also have their own loyalty programme called the Star Rewards scheme, where drivers can save 1p per litre of fuel.
Shoppers earn one point for every litre of fuel purchased, and receive £5 off when they hit 500 points. At the moment, the garage is offering 200 bonus points when you sign up, which means you’ll be even closer to a fiver off your fuel bill just for downloading the app.
As well as getting cash off at the pump, customers can trade in their points for a Love2Shop, or donate it to a charity like Action for Children, The Trussell Trust, Age UK and FareShare.
Shell
Shell customers can rack up discounts for staying loyal and visiting the chain regularly.
The Shell Go rewards system sees customers rewarded on every ‘visit’, which is recorded when spending at least £2 in the shop or £10 on fuel
Shopper will also be treated to 10 per cent off all hot drinks, deli2go and Jamie Oliver deli by Shell food ranges. You’ll also get money off fuel every 10 visits, although the company hasn’t specified how much money off motorists will get.
They do specify that when you fill up with Shell V-Power, you will get an extra £3 fuel reward for every 300 litres you buy.
Sainsbury's
Much like at Esso, you can collect and spend Nectar points at Sainsbury’s fuel stations, earning one point for every litre of fuel purchased in Sainsbury’s stations.
If you’re a regular Sainsbury’s shopper, sometimes the till prints out vouchers for double points on fuel, so it’s well worth holding onto these and filling up to take advantage of the extra points.
At Sainsbury’s, 500 Nectar points equates to £2.50, and you can knock multiples of £2.50 off your bill at the checkout, For example, if you had 1,700 Nectar points, you could spent 1,500 of them and knock £7.50 off your receipt.
Nectar points can only be redeemed at the kiosk in the station, and not at the pay at pump keypads.
Tesco
Tesco also offers deals on fuel for Clubcard holders, who can earn points when filling up, or spend them to get money knocked off.
At a Tesco petrol station, drivers can earn one point for every £2 spent on fuel, or at an Esso petrol station with a Tesco Express, it's one point for every £3 you spend on fuel. Shoppers can also collect one point for every £1 you spend at a Tesco supermarket.
You'll get a £1.50 voucher for every 150 points you get, and can be spent on fuel at all Tesco petrol stations at face value. In other words, a £3 voucher could be spent on £3 of fuel. You can also spend your vouchers at Esso sites with a Tesco Express.
