A woman who 'has never done a big full shop at Aldi ' decided to shop there after swapping it from Asda - and was left shocked to find the huge price difference between the two.
With the cost of living rising and prices of staple items increasing by the minute, Emily Sleight decided to see changing where she usually does her food shop was worth it, report Liverpool Echo.
Emily, who says she remembers, "a time when my weekly shop for two people would cost around £50 at Asda, but now, it ranges from £60-£65 for the same types of products," wanted to see if the store that's Specialbuy section changes weekly could save her the big bucks.
Upon entering Aldi, the shopper says she was immediately drawn to the fresh flowers section - with a bunch of lillies on sale for less than £3.
After passing the meat section, she was left 'amazed' at the sheer choice on offer. But despite hoping for cheap prices, she says: "The meat section at my local Aldi was absolutely huge, but unfortunately, prices were still pretty steep.
"A box of fresh chicken breast (approximately four big ones) would set me back almost £6, which I found absolutely mind-blowing. I was always under the impression that Aldi meat would be cheaper, but perhaps I was wrong.
"It wasn't until I checked the Asda website that I realised the same box of chicken from Asda was ever so slightly cheaper, only by 3p, mind."
Reiterating the cost of living, she added: "So far, I wasn't overly impressed, but in reality, what can you expect with the cost of living crisis bumping up the price of pretty much everything?"
Daily lunch items such as ready to eat chicken were however priced at £1.99, considering a pack from Asda usually sets shoppers back around £2.80.
Continuing her shop, Emily noticed that a wide range of items in Aldi were priced marginally cheaper than Asda.
A pack of spinach cost 75p which was cheaper than Asda's at a whopping £1; a small pack of seeded bread cost just 60p as opposed to Asda's £1; and in terms of eggs, 12 free range eggs from Aldi set her back £2.09 as opposed to Asda's £2.20.
Staple bathrooms such a toothpaste cost a mere 55pence, but the cheapest that could be found online at Asda was nearly double - at 98p.
Venturing into the cost of feminine hygiene products, Emily says that the cost of these 'impressed' her - costing 69p as opposed to a whopping £2.50 in Asda.
Despite Aldi looking to be considerably cheaper than its British supermarket chain, Asda, Emily noticed a lot of dupes from the German food store.
She was amazed to find eight different dupes of products she usually buys on a weekly basis, some of which include:
- Snackrite 'Lights' - 99p for 6 - a dupe for the Walkers Oven Baked crisps priced at £1.65 for 6
- Meatster Salami Snack -£1.69 for 10 - a dupe for Peperami Original Minis priced at £2.25 for 10
- Alcafe Time Intenso Barista Coffee - £2.29 - a dupe for £3.50 Nescafe Azera Coffee priced at £3.50
- Aldi Cheese Puffs crisps -£1.19 for 10 - a dupe for Walkers Wotsits crisp s priced at £1.65 for 6
Completing her shop, Emily found that there were fair few positives to her shop at Aldi - the main one being the sheer difference in price for dupe products.
She added: "The fact I can get pretty much the exact same product for considerably cheaper means I'll definitely be shopping more at Aldi."
Although she admitted that she will not make the change and do her weekly shop in Aldi, she will make a habit of visiting the store more for specific items - including crisps, lunchtime snacks, coffee and dog food.
In total, her bill ended up being £69, which she says is usually more than what she spends in Asda.
However, she did admit that she picked up an extra few 'homey' bits such as candles and cleaning sprays.
