A landmark London wedding venue loved by rock stars and Hollywood royalty is set to celebrate its centenary by holding 100 marriage ceremonies on the same day.
Old Marylebone Town Hall has staged more celebrity nuptials than anywhere else in the UK, marrying Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Sean Bean and Georgina Sutcliffe and Cilla Black and Bobby Willis.
Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney liked it so much he married first wife Linda there in 1969 and then used the hall again for his third wedding with Nancy Shevell in 2011. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher also tied the knot there twice — with actress Patsy Kensit in 1997 and then singer Nicole Appleton in 2001.
Now Westminster council is offering 100 couples the opportunity to get married or form a civil partnership at the spot for just £100, a tenth of the average fee. Applications opened today for people who live, work or study in Westminster and want to marry on October 1, 2024 — the building’s 100th anniversary.
Services on the day will start at 8am and run until 10.30pm. All 75 staff at the hall will work to deliver seven ceremonies an hour for couples, with up to eight guests.
Since its doors opened in 1924, over 125,000 couples have wed at the venue in Marylebone Road.
Westminster’s former chief registrar Alison Cathcart, who presided over Sir Paul’s marriage to Ms Shevell, said: “It is an unrivalled location.”
Westminster councillor Tim Roca said: “We’re so lucky to be the custodians of one of Britain’s most illustrious and cherished wedding venues which has seen thousands celebrate their love for one another. The Old Marylebone Town Hall is a greatmonument of Westminster, and we are proud to be celebrating 100 years of its standing.”
Details on how to book can be found on the council’s weddings webpage.
