Love Island viewers torn over Laura Whitmore's announcement during 2022 final

Love Island viewers are all saying the same thing after tuning into ITV2 for the Love Island 2022 final. The last instalment of series 8 aired on Monday, August 1 and saw Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Davide Sanclimenti crowned winners.

Meanwhile, Gemma Owen and Luca Bish placed runners-up, while Indiyah Polack and Dami Hope came third and Tasha Ghouri and Andrew Le Page came fourth. But as the proceedings began on Monday night many were left confused by a statement made by presenter Laura Whitmore.

Anyone who has ever seen a full series of the dating programme before knows the most exciting part of the final is seeing if the eventual winners choose "love or money". The twist sees the contestants given the choice of splitting the £50,000 prize with their other half or stealing it all for themselves.

There have been no "steals" to date but ITV2 viewers were still looking forward to see how this year's finale would play out. However, within seconds of the episode starting, Laura announced the winners would split £50,000 and "wouldn't be asked to choose between love and money."

Social media erupted shortly after with one person writing on Twitter: "Excuse you what!? Removing the final twist, so no longer 'money or love'. Someone needs sacking," while another added: "Hold up, don't they do that thing where they can steal the money anymore? I was ready for shenanigans."

And a third commented: "LOVE ISLAND WTF!!!!!! Where is the split or steal?!!!!!!!"

Some were happy with the decision to axe the twist, however, as one viewer wrote: "I think they’ve finally realised how pointless the split and steal is."

While another added: "Have they finally stopped bothering with the split and steal option? Because it really never worked." For more showbiz and television stories, get our newsletter here.
