Love Island villa design tricks encourage rows - fire pit angle and garden layout

The Love Island villa in Majorca is a thing of beauty.

With its infinity pool, outdoor kitchen, daybed, fire pit and terrace, it's the perfect space for a summer of love. Or is it?

According to an expert, the villa's stunning design was built with one thing in mind, and that's drama. And it's certainly seen its fair share of it this year.

From Ekin-Su's illicit snogs with Jay on the terrace, to Tasha's tears over the boys' mass eye-rolling when she recoupled with Andrew at the fire pit, there's been no shortage of rows.

Who can forget Ekin-Su and Davide's garden showdown when he branded her a 'liar and an actress', or the fight between Gemma and Luca over the air hostess challenge?

And that's not to mention the most explosive recoupling yet by the firepit and bombshell Nathalia's beef with Ekin that they resolved with a pancake battle.

But just how does the layout create so much tension?

Speaking to The Mirror on behalf of Hayes Garden World , gardening expert Angela Slater explains: "Garden design and architecture can be used in all kinds of clever ways to affect how we socialise and interact with one another.

"And it seems that this is something the Love Island producers have taken advantage of, using certain features of the villa’s layout to invoke conversation or to create more drama.”

The Fire Pit

There have been numerous rows sparked by expressions and remarks around the fire pit this year (ITV)

According to Angela, the key to the fire pit's dramatic success is the fact there's no way for Islanders to hide their expressions.

She said: "Not only do the open flames in the fire pit create a sense of drama in themselves, but the seating area is curved around the bowl. This means it's the perfect layout for the Islanders to see each other's reactions to news - there’s nowhere for you to hide how you're feeling.

"This has undoubtedly led to some memorable moments over the years, with Islanders exchanging knowing glances and scathing remarks due to the unavoidable eye contact with fellow contestants.

"The fire pit caused drama on this year's season of Love Island after Gemma and Ekin-Su exchanged words about the new girls entering the villa, which given the layout of the fire pit, did not go unnoticed."

The Terrace

The terrace is supposed to be a private escape, but it's actually not that private (ITV)

The terrace is the place for first kisses, debriefs and anything the Islanders hope to do in private. However, Angela points out that producers have managed to ensure that villa-mates can always get a sneak peek at the action.

She explained: "The terrace walls are designed in such a way that there is the chance Islanders below can view upstairs, leading to one of the most memorable moments of the series with Ekin-Su crawling along the floor to hide away with Jay.

"The terrace has also been designed to ensure that you have a perfect view of those below, and are usually within earshot of conversations in the garden. Giving the Islanders the ability to spy on others is a surefire way to start drama; namely when the other islanders watch contestants' dates which often take place just below the terrace."

Garden Layout

According to Angela, the garden was set out to make sure that gossip and conflict can spread like wildfire across the villa, and that no sneaky chats go unnoticed.

She said: "The ground is flat with some raised platforms and the seating tends to face inwards, meaning that from most areas in the garden you can see what everyone else is up to.

"It’s likely that the beanbags have been chosen as the seating of choice, as they don't have a back to them and can be moved around, meaning that the Islanders have nothing blocking their view of each other. If someone's partner is pulled for a chat - they’ll know about it due to the open plan layout."

The Daybed

The daybed gives Islanders another sleeping alternative (ITV/REX/Shutterstock)

Angela believes the daybeds are there for one reason - and that's to put the couples to the test during Casa Amor. Indeed, while Luca insisted on sleeping outside, he was annoyed when he learned that Gemma had not done the same.

She explains: "They are a significant design choice within the show, as they give the contestants the option to sleep outside if they want to.

"The daybeds usually prove most polarising during Casa Amor, where you will notice they are also present - and for good reason.

"Daybeds in both locations give couples the option to match each other's behaviours and decision to sleep outdoors. As we know, this can lead to big arguments."

The Kitchen

Nothing that happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen due to it being open-air (ITV/REX/Shutterstock)

Angela explains that most of the socialising and bonding takes place in the kitchen, and having it outdoors means that everyone else can see subtle connections that might be forming.

She said: "The fact that the kitchen is based outdoors is a great way to encourage socialisation and bonding between the Islanders. Though it appears to be generally unused other than for making breakfast and snacks, placing it within the garden ensures that even when completing a mundane task, contestants will be interacting.

"Positioning the kitchen outside also adds to the idea that there is no hiding, and contestants can always see each other’s behaviour. For example, a prevalent argument this season occurred between Luca and Gemma after Luca saw how she interacted with Billy in the kitchen."
