Love Island's Maura Higgins' toxic shock syndrome health battle after leaving tampon in for 3 months

Love Island star Maura Higgins has opened up about how she almost died from toxic shock syndrome after medics found a tampon inside her, three months after she used it.

The NHS states toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by bacteria getting into the body and releasing harmful toxins. It's often associated with tampon use in young women, but it can affect anyone of any age, and can be fatal if not treated promptly.

The Love Island star has spoken about her experience with the condition and how she hopes to raise awareness of the risks for people, The Mirror reports.
