Love Island's Iain Stirling flustered by question about new host Maya Jama after wife Laura Whitmore quit

Love Island narrator Iain Stirling seemed to get a bit flustered today as he was quizzed on Good Morning Britain about the ITV show's new host. Maya Jama made her debut as the presenter when the show aired on Monday night in South Africa.

Back in October, it was announced that the 28-year-old would be taking over from Laura Whitmore, Iain's wife, who stepped down after the 2022 summer series.

And today on GMB, hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls quizzed Iain on the new presenter. Referencing some of the show's catchphrases, Ed asked him: "Have you said to [Maya], 'Can you come over for a chat?' or 'I'm sending you a text?'"

The 34-year-old laughed: "To Maya Jama? I'm sure my wife would have something to say about that if that happened."

He then said: "Maya is absolutely fantastic, Laura was absolutely fantastic, Maya is doing such a good job... her slow-mo walks have been something else. Great looks."

The comedian then went on to reveal that he has been recording the funny voiceovers from his home in London, as it's not necessary that he needs to be out in South Africa.

He said that pre-pandemic, he used to fly out to the villa’s location, but after the pandemic they realised that "although it’s nice being out there, it isn’t a necessity."

Speaking then about the contestants in this year's line-up, he said he thinks Will is the underdog.

He said: "Look, as we all know, the British public love an underdog, and there is no better underdog on television at the moment than farmer Will."

The co-hosts asked Iain for his thoughts on Maya’s sensational debut (ITV)

He added: "I really like him, He sounds like Kurtan from This Country. And actually, you see a lot of contestants on Love Island who do that thing where they sort of get off to a slow start. The British public gets behind them. He needs to find someone - the farmer needs a wife!"
