The much-anticipated first episode of Love Island’s eighth series aired on ITV this evening. However, host Laura Whitmore revealed a change to the format which changed the way the first set of couples were determined.
Previously, the girls would be asked to step forward if they’ve taken a fancy to a particular boy, before the boy would choose who they want to couple up with. However, Whitmore stated that the programme “asked the public to play cupid and pick the boy they thought you should couple up with.”
This alteration to the format wasn’t met with universal positivity from viewers. Instead, many fans made a simple suggestion which would have enhanced this process significantly and undoubtedly caused early drama.

Leading the way with this proposal was 2019 Love Island winner Amber Rose Gill, who tweeted “I wish we let them couple up and then switch to NA we chose THANK YEW #loveisland.” Fans were quick to get on board with this idea, with Bella commenting: “YES!!! Amber for creative director!!!!!!!” and Villa Birds: The Love Island Podcast adding: “the draaaaama!!!! what a missed opportunity.”
Stuart was surprised this wasn’t how the programme panned out, “That’s how I thought it would be. They’d couple up and then at the end of the episode they’d be put into the couples the public picked #LoveIsland.”
Super TV agreed: “They should’ve asked the men to pick a girl first and THEN told them, no, the public have picked - it would’ve been so much more dramatic,” to which @JustBeingBarry replied: “This is the kinda pot stirring I need in my life.”
