Love Island bosses have three key rules for entering the villa - including age limit that could see someone younger than Gemma

Season eight of Love Island is well underway in Mallorca with millions tuning in to ITV and Virgin Media to get to know this year’s singletons.

After sieving through thousands of applications, producers have compiled a short list of contestants who are looking for love this season.

If you’ve ever wondered what that application process is like, or are simply looking for new ways to find love, get a tan, and potentially win 50k, here’s what you need to know.

The online application page starts by saying: "How do you fancy finding love in the sun? We're now on the lookout for lively singles from across the country to take part. ITV2 is looking for vibrant singles from across the UK who want to head to the sun, in search of love!

“The chosen cast will spend time in a luxury villa, getting to know one another, but to remain in paradise they must win the hearts of the public and their fellow Islanders who ultimately decide their fate on Love Island.

“If you think you’ve got what it takes, then we want to hear from you straight away."

Love Island bosses have some strict rules for any future hopefuls around their age, relationship status, and passport rules.

One of the most important is that you are over 18 before the closing date for entries.

The official website also says you must be single before the show begins, you have to have a valid passport with at least 6 months left of validity, and be available for 10 weeks to film.

The show’s casting producer for the show Lewis Evans also told Cosmopolitan it’s not just about what you put on paper: “We also cast our net far and wide by looking at social media profiles (Twitter and Instagram) as it’s always quite easy to gauge on there people who are popular, aren’t afraid to show themselves off and have a big following.

“We also attend events and hold street castings for prospective Islanders. The key is that they are over 18, single, and looking for love.”

Once you’ve chosen to advance on from the written application stages, you then are subjected to a series of interviews, where producers look for unique personality traits that will keep the public entertained.

“It’s all about having a great mix of desirable, aspirational singletons who have interesting and engaging personalities to keep our viewers glued and entertained by what’s going on in the villa,” Lewis says.

Applications for the next series will likely open before the end of the year, but be quick because there were over 85,000 applications sent in for the 2018 run.
