Louisville congressman on House speaker woes: "I've never rooted for disfunction"

Another day, another unsuccessful vote for Speaker of the House. Kentucky’s 5 Republican House members all voted for Jim Jordan Wednesday, as they did the day before. It wasn’t enough, leaving the House without a speaker for more than two weeks. Congressman Morgan McGarvey, a Democrat from Louisville, told WEKU News he’s never rooted for dysfunction.

“I think it's obvious that Jim Jordan, the founder of the extremist house, Freedom Caucus, is too extreme, even for this House of Representatives. And what I'd like to see is a bipartisan path forward.”

McGarvey is in his first term and is the only Democratic member of Kentucky’s House delegation. He said members of his party have reached out to Republicans about some sort of power-sharing agreement.

“So far, there haven't been a lot of serious even offers back from the Republicans. We just want to talk about a way forward. I don't think that it's anything extreme.”

None of Kentucky’s five House Republicans responded to a request for an interview from WEKU News.
