A power struggle in Rome may have shaped the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, a newly discovered papal letter reveals.
William, the Duke of Normandy, defeated Harold Godwinson and his forces in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The events leading up to the battle are depicted on the 230ft Bayeux Tapestry, which is set to be displayed at the British Museum in London.
