The Los Angeles Sparks have announced the departure of head coach Curt Miller after the team missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The decision to part ways was described as a mutual agreement between Miller and the franchise.
Miller, who took over coaching duties two seasons ago, led the Sparks to a disappointing 8-32 record this season, the worst in the league. Despite the challenges, forward Dearica Hamby received All-Star honors and The Associated Press Most Improved Player award, while Rickea Jackson was named to the AP All-Rookie Team.
Prior to his time with the Sparks, Miller had a successful coaching career, including a stint with the Connecticut Sun where he achieved a 165-141 record. He was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2017 and also served as the Sun's general manager, becoming the league's first Executive of the Year.
Under Miller's guidance, the Sun reached the WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. Known for his leadership and commitment to building a strong team culture, Miller expressed pride in the foundation laid during his tenure with the Sparks.
Looking ahead, the Sparks will now embark on a search for a new head coach as they aim to revitalize the franchise and return to championship contention. Despite the recent struggles, Miller believes that the team is well-positioned for future success and wishes the players the best for the upcoming 2025 season.
Miller, who was the first openly gay male coach in college or professional basketball, previously served as an assistant coach for the Sparks in 2015. As he departs from the organization, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead and contribute to the rebuilding efforts of the franchise.
