A Los Angeles artist spent about four decades creating a unique underground home in the forests of Puerto Rico, turning discarded materials into a maze of tunnels, chambers and artworks. Known as Termitopia, the structure sits on a mountain near Las Marías and was built by Brian Birdsall, who moved away from Los Angeles and made a life in the Puerto Rican countryside. Rather than following conventional building methods, he shaped the home around the idea of reusing materials that would otherwise become waste. The result is part home, part artwork and part underground world.
